    Introduction to GIS

Learn spatial thinking, QGIS, spatial analysis, and AI-assisted GIS — from your first map to a complete analysis project

    What you'll learn
⚡ Explain what a GIS is, what its building blocks are, and how it differs from a simple map
⚡ Choose appropriate coordinate systems, map projections, scales, and resolutions for a task
⚡ Distinguish vector and raster data, and prepare, inspect, and manage both in a QGIS project
⚡ Design and export clear, purposeful maps using symbology, labels, and print layouts
⚡ Apply core spatial analysis tools — buffers, overlays, queries, interpolation, and terrain analysis — to answer real geographic questions
⚡ Build suitability models and automate repeatable workflows with the QGIS Model Designer, then share results as web maps
⚡ Use AI assistants and GeoAI concepts responsibly, verifying every output with quality-control checks

Maps are everywhere — but a map is only the output. Behind every useful map is a Geographic Information System: the data, the reasoning, and the ability to ask a question again. Introduction to GIS teaches you how to think spatially and how to turn a real geographic question into a trustworthy, well-documented answer.

You’ll start with the foundations that every GIS professional relies on: how location and attributes work together, how coordinate systems and map projections shape what you see, what scale and resolution really mean, and when to use vector or raster data. Then you’ll move into hands-on work in QGIS, the free and open-source GIS software used around the world — setting up projects, inspecting layers, managing attributes, designing clear maps, and exporting professional layouts.

The heart of the course is spatial analysis. Across one continuing planning project, you’ll build buffers, combine layers with overlay operations, run spatial queries, create surfaces with interpolation, derive slope and aspect from elevation models, explore viewsheds and watersheds, summarise rasters with zonal statistics, and build suitability models. You’ll also learn to share results as web maps and automate repeated workflows with the Model Designer.

The final module looks at where GIS is heading. You’ll learn the difference between automation, AI assistance, and GeoAI; how AI plugins can help you draft expressions, code, and documentation inside QGIS; and how to keep a human firmly in the loop — reviewing, testing, and verifying everything before you trust it.

Throughout, the emphasis is on understanding why an operation is the right one and how to check that the result makes sense, rather than memorising menu clicks. By the end, you’ll have a complete GIS toolkit, a clear workflow you can reuse on any project, and the habits that separate a result that merely runs from one that is actually correct.
