    Description
This course on Geometric Design of Highways is designed to develop a strong understanding of highway geometric elements with special emphasis onnumerical problems, IRC recommendations, and practical design applications. The course is particularly useful for Civil Engineering students, practicing engineers, and aspirants preparing forGATE and other competitive examinations.

The course begins with the fundamentals of highway geometric design, includingdesign speed, sight distance, camber, gradients, and roadway elements. Greater importance is given to solving numerical problems systematically using relevantIRC guidelines, standard formulas, and design criteria.

Students will learn to calculate Stopping Sight Distance (SSD), Overtaking Sight Distance (OSD), Intermediate Sight Distance (ISD), and safe sight distances under different highway conditions. Detailed problem-solving sessions covers uperelevation, radius of horizontal curves, extra widening, transition curves, and setback distance. The course also focuses on vertical alignment, including gradients, summit curves, valley curves, and their associated design calculations. Step-by-step numerical examples are provided to help students understand the selection of formulas, substitution of values, unit conversion, and interpretation of final answers.

Special attention is given to IRC-based numerical questions and examination-oriented problems, including conceptual, formula-based, and application-oriented questions. By completing this course, learners will gain confidence in solving highway geometric design problems accurately and applying IRC recommendations to practical highway design situations.
