Advanced Site Response Analysis Using PLAXIS 2D and 3D

From Fundamentals to Advanced 2D and 3D Numerical Modelling

    What you'll learn
Understand the key mechanisms that control site response, and distinguish between situations where site response analysis is critical
Select and apply appropriate constitutive models for site response analysis, with an understanding of stiffness degradation, damping behaviour
Build robust site response models in PLAXIS 2D, including domain, boundary conditions, input motion application, and numerical stability consideratio
Perform advanced site response analysis in PLAXIS 3D, and recognise when 3D modelling is warranted over 1D or 2D approaches
Interpret site response outputs critically, moving beyond surface acceleration plots to assess depth-dependent response, amplification trends, and deformation
Evaluate the sensitivity of site response results to modelling assumptions, soil behaviour, and numerical choices
Communicate site response outcomes and limitations clearly in engineering reports and technical reviews

    Requirements
A working knowledge of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering fundamentals, including stress–strain behaviour of soils
Basic familiarity with seismic loading concepts and earthquake engineering terminology
Prior exposure to numerical modelling in geotechnical engineering (e.g. finite-element or finite-difference methods)
Basic experience with PLAXIS 2D or PLAXIS 3D, including model navigation and interpretation of results

    Description
This course provides a practitioner-focused treatment of site response analysis, with an emphasis on nonlinear numerical modelling and engineering interpretation using PLAXIS 2D and PLAXIS 3D.Unlike many site response courses that focus heavily on theory or simplified equivalent-linear tools, this course is intentionally designed for practising engineers who need to understand how site response is assessed in real projects, how modelling choices influence results, and how to interpret outputs with confidence.

The course is structured around four core modules:Fundamentals of site response analysis, focusing on the mechanisms that actually control ground motion modification Constitutive models used in site response analysis, including stiffness degradation, damping behaviour, and their influence on computed response Step-by-step site response analysis in PLAXIS 2D, covering model setup, boundary conditions, input motions, and result interpretation Advanced site response analysis in PLAXIS 3D, highlighting when 3D modelling is warranted and how it changes response characteristics The emphasis throughout is on implementation, not textbook derivations.Equivalent-linear tools and generic workflows are intentionally excluded in favour of nonlinear finite-element modelling approaches commonly adopted in advanced onshore and offshore projects.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:Decide when site response analysis is required and when it adds little value Select and apply appropriate constitutive models for nonlinear site response problemsBuild robust site response models in PLAXIS 2D and 3DCritically interpret site response outputs beyond surface acceleration plotsCommunicate site response results and limitations clearly in engineering reports This course is intended for geotechnical and earthquake engineers with prior exposure to soil mechanics and numerical modelling, who wish to develop practical, project-ready capability in advanced site response analysis.

    Who this course is for
Geotechnical and earthquake engineers involved in seismic ground response, soil–structure interaction, or foundation design
Practising engineers and consultants who use, or plan to use, numerical modelling for site response assessment
Engineers with experience in PLAXIS 2D or 3D seeking to apply the software specifically to site response analysis
Postgraduate students and researchers with a solid background in soil mechanics and interest in advanced numerical modelling
Engineering professionals looking to move beyond simplified or equivalent-linear site response approaches and adopt nonlinear finite-element methods
