Road Drainage Engineering: From SewerGEMS to ICM Integration

Design and Simulation of Road Drainage Systems Using SewerGEMS and Integrated with Infoworks ICM

    What you'll learn
Understand the fundamentals of road surface drainage systems, including runoff generation, inlet capture, and conveyance using 1D modeling concepts
Build a complete 1D road surface drainage network in SewerGEMS, including catchments, inlets, conduits, junctions, and outfalls.
Apply appropriate rainfall data and hydrologic methods to estimate surface runoff for urban road drainage analysis.
Integrate SewerGEMS drainage models with InfoWorks ICM, enabling advanced urban drainage and flood assessment workflows.

    Requirements
Basic understanding of civil or water engineering concepts such as drainage, flow, and pipelines is helpful but not mandatory.
Familiarity with basic computer operations (file handling, installing software, navigating Windows) is required.
No prior experience with SewerGEMS or InfoWorks ICM is required — the course starts from the fundamentals and progresses step by step.
A Windows-based computer capable of running hydraulic modeling software (SewerGEMS / InfoWorks ICM).

    Description
Urban road flooding and inadequate surface drainage are major challenges in modern infrastructure projects. Accurate modeling and analysis of road surface drainage systems are essential for designing efficient, reliable, and compliant storm water networks. This course provides a step-by-step, practical guide to creating and analyzing a 1D road surface drainage network using SewerGEMS and integrating it with InfoWorks ICM. You will learn how to transform real-world road layouts into functional drainage models, simulate storm events, and evaluate system performance under various design conditions.Starting from the fundamentals, the course walks you through catchment delineation, inlet modeling, pipe network creation, rainfall application, and hydraulic simulation in SewerGEMS. You will then learn how to integrate the SewerGEMS model with InfoWorks ICM to support advanced urban drainage workflows and decision-making.The course focuses on hands-on learning, using realistic examples and industry-standard practices rather than theory alone. By the end of the course, you will be confident in building, running, and interpreting 1D road drainage models and preparing professional outputs suitable for design reviews, consultancy projects, and authority submissions.Whether you are a student, a practicing engineer, or a professional transitioning into stormwater modeling, this course will equip you with practical skills that are directly applicable to real infrastructure projects. What Makes This Course Different Real-world road surface drainage modeling workflow Practical SewerGEMS to Info Works ICM integration Beginner-friendly explanations with professional-level outcomes Focus on design storms, system performance, and optimization Ideal for consultancy, municipal, and infrastructure projects

    Who this course is for
Graduate engineers and early-career professionals seeking hands-on experience in building and analyzing 1D drainage networks using SewerGEMS and InfoWorks ICM.
Practicing civil and drainage engineers involved in road infrastructure, urban development, and stormwater management who want to enhance their modeling and design capabilities.
