Anyone who would have predicted at the start of the new millennium that it would take less than 20 years for a substantial number of books on timber high-rises to be published would have been labelled a dreamer. Thanks to new timber materials, connection systems, hybrid constructions, and advanced fire safety knowledge coupled with comprehensive prefabrication methods, timber construction, which had been forgotten for decades, has started a race to catch up and is about to revolutionize the building industry. At the same time, it offers solutions to make construction in large parts of the world more ecologically sustainable, as the CO2 savings are substantial if buildings are consistently constructed using renewable materials. This has a particular impact on tall buildings, as the amount of construction material required increases almost exponentially with height. High-rise buildings do not always make sense, but if they are built, then wood can make a significant contribution to minimizing resource consumption.
