Concrete comprises six ingredients – coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, cement, water, admixture and reinforcement. Of these six ingredients, only the steel reinforcement is responsible for making a concrete structure seismically resilient – the role of other ingredients is much less significant. Seismic-resistant concrete structures can only be achieved by increasing the rebar material’s ductility and prescribing proper detailing in laying out or fabricating the rebar, which will ensure structural ductile behavior. Thus, the importance of understanding the behavior of rebar cannot be overstated. Various aspects of reinforcement such as some historical aspects, engineering properties, testing methods and procedures, characteristics of high strength rebar, code application, placing and fabrication details, usage of coating on rebar for corrosion protection and rebar splicing and coupling, alternative rebar materials, etc. are discussed in ten different chapters in this book
