Structural Design of a 5-Story Hotel - Full Course
From Concept to Construction, Get Job-Ready Skills by Designing a Real 5-Story Hotel Building

What you'll learn
Model a realistic 5-story hotel building in ETABS from scratch
Define and assign structural elements (beams, columns, slabs, walls, Staircase, Foundation, etc.)
Apply gravity and live, loads per relevant codes
Understand Floating Columns
Perform structural analysis and interpret ETABS output (displacements, forces, moments)
Design of slabs and foundations using CSI SAFE and ETABS
Learn practical drafting techniques for presenting a complete structural set
Detail reinforcement for slabs, beams, columns, staircases, and footings
Learn load path concepts and how forces are transferred through a structure
Get exposure to international design standards (like ACI, Eurocode, or relevant local codes)
Learn how to prepare structural layout for buildings
Requirements
Basic understanding of structural engineering principles (e.g., load types, structural elements)
Familiarity with reinforced concrete design concepts (e.g., bending, shear, reinforcement basics)
Access to a computer/laptop capable of running ETABS, AutoCAD, and SAFE software
Willingness to learn practical, real-world structural design workflows
Strong interest in designing real buildings, especially multi-story structures like hotels
Engineering or architecture background (students, recent graduates, or professionals)
Prior exposure to ETABS, AutoCAD, or SAFE is helpful but not mandatory – step-by-step guidance is provided
Description
This comprehensive, project-based course guides students through the complete structural design of a five-story reinforced concrete (RC) hotel building, using leading industry software: ETABS for superstructure modeling and analysis, and CSI SAFE for foundation design. It is tailored for civil engineering students, graduates, and professionals who want to build real-world skills in multi-story building design.
What the Course Covers:
The course begins with the creation of structural layout drawings—including columns, beams, and slabs—using AutoCAD.
These drawings are then imported into ETABS, where you'll develop a full 3D model of the building.
You'll learn to define and model key structural elements such as:Columns (including floating columns) Beams and slabs Shear walls Staircases (Open well staircase and Dog leg staircase A steel roof truss system with Z purlins and aluminum roofing sheet You’ll also learn how to apply gravity loads and load combinations in accordance with two major international standards:British Standards (BS 8110) American Concrete Institute (ACI 318) Structural Analysis and Design:Once the model is complete, you’ll carry out a full structural analysis of the building.
Key analysis and design topics include:Checking deflection limits based on British Code provisions Evaluating shear force and bending moment diagrams for beams and columns Designing structural members (beams, slabs, columns, shear walls) to ensure they meet strength and serviceability criteria Foundation Design with CSI SAFE:After analyzing and exporting footing reactions from ETABS, the course transitions into foundation design using CSI SAFE.
You’ll learn to:
Design isolated footings (pad footings) Perform punching shear checks (one-way shear and two-way shear) Ensure stability and serviceability of the substructure Reinforcement Detailing:Detailed guidance will be provided on how to reinforce structural members according to design outputs, covering:Rebar sizing and placement for slabs, beams, columns, and foundations Reinforcement for shear walls and staircases Drafting reinforcement details in AutoCAD, suitable for construction drawings Learning Outcomes:By the end of this course, participants will be able to:Confidently model and analyze a multi-story RC structure in ETABS Design both superstructure and foundation components according to the code Apply both British and American design standards in practical scenarios Detail reinforcement and prepare structural drawings using AutoCAD Deliver a complete hotel building project from concept to construction-ready design Whether you're aiming to land your first job, sharpen your design skills, or add a strong project to your portfolio, this course offers practical, job-ready experience that bridges the gap between theory and real-world application.
Who this course is for
Civil and structural engineering students looking to gain hands-on design experience
Structural design interns or junior engineers involved in building projects
Anyone preparing for structural engineering job interviews or seeking career advancement
Engineers aiming to learn how to detail reinforcement accurately for construction
Professionals working in construction, consulting, or design firms who want to upgrade their technical capabilities
