Discover Bridge Over Missouri River


Introduction

The Discovery Bridge is located on the Pan American Highway US 81 over the Missouri River between South Yankton, Nebraska and Yankton, South Dakota. This bridge replaces the Yankton Meridian Bridge which was built in 1924 by the Meridian Highway Bridge Company of Yankton, SD.

This bridge project is the culmination of nearly twenty years of efforts by community members and area residents to get a new bridge for this location. Momentum for the project built in 2001 when the City of Yankton formed the Build Yankton’s Bridge Committee to spearhead the effort. The diverse group of bridge boosters from Nebraska and South Dakota worked together to gain funding for the project. Several organizations at all levels of government were involved in the planning process including U S Fish & Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Federal Highway Administration, U S Army Corps of Engineers, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, South Dakota Department of Transportation along with the Nebraska Department of Roads.
